The Institute of Thermal Engineering at TU Graz

is the project coordinator and it will investigate the coupling of biomass gasification with SOFCs, conducting experiments in single fuel cells and with CFD modelling. Besides, it supports the techno-economic analysis, mainly regarding cooling, and technology developments regarding gas cleaning, with its biomass gasification test rig, and fixed-bed gasification with modelling.

lead the development of the gas cleaning system in the project and collaborate in the techno-economic analysis.
With experience of former projects and special knowledge of producer gas characterisation BEST will engineer a novel, compact and mobile facility for filtration and dry desulphurisation. This pilot plant will evaluate the gas cleaning process under different producer gas compositions, including impurities, related to the gasification technologies of the project partners.

Within this project Hargassner aims the investigation

of the technical feasibility of the novel combination of the existing wood-gasifier and a SOFC. Test runs and measurement campaigns will be performed at the gasifier. Therefore Hargassner will contribute access to their sites as well as necessary infrastructure, resources, personnel and last but not least crucial know-how which will also contribute to the techno-economic analysis.

Within the project, IEN conducts long-term experiments

of more than 300 hours with SOFC stacks, employing a synthetic gas mixture as well as a real producer gas from selected gasifiers. The tasks include determination and elimination of the limiting factor of the operation of gasifiers coupled with SOFCs. These include the fluctuation of impurities which will be studied within the project. For that reason desulphurization system will be customized and validated in real operating conditions.

MTF adapts and optimises

the switch in the gasification medium from air to oxygen enriched air and steam, in order to increase the calorific value of the producer gas and improve coupling with power generation technologies, such as SOFC. These developments are going to be supported by a model of a gasifier. Furthermore, MTF coordinates the SMEs in the elaboration of the techno-economic analysis.

RISE characterises fuel feed-stocks

and runs small-scale gasification tests. In addition it develops and validates advanced gas cleaning solutions for minor SOFC impurities.
In the last stage of the project RISE leads the modelling and evaluation of the operating conditions and the performance of an absorption chiller integrated with the suggested CCHP system including energy storage. Furthermore, RISE conducts a techno-economic system analysis relative to other CCHP systems.

In this project, CRT leads the first inventory

of producer gas specification and performs and evaluates the gasification tests in its test plant.
Furthermore, CRT evaluates a selection of advanced gas cleaning solution for minor SOFC impurities with real producer gas from its test plant. In addition, it participates in the experimental test campaign and evaluates its gasification technology with the mobile gas cleaning unit developed by BE2020.
